چکیده

Consider the following problem. An unknown number k of ants, initially located at the nest, searches the plane for a treasure. The identical, deterministic ants take steps asynchronously, until eventually an ant moves onto the location of the treasure. The only means to record the progress of the search is by marking each explored grid point with a pheromone. It is well-known that ants have this capability, as well as being able to determine the direction in which the nest lies. Under these assumptions, we provide an extremely simple algorithm that is factor 5.5-optimal in terms of the worst-case number of asynchronous rounds required to find the treasure. This shows that the proposed mechanism of marking searched areas by pheromone is very powerful: Feinerman et al. proved that, without it, ants need to be given a constant-factor approximation of k to achieve asymptotic optimality, even when randomization is available.

A continuous model of ant foraging with pheromones and trail formation

We propose and numerically analyze a PDE model of ant foraging behavior. Ant foraging is a prime example of individuals following simple behavioral rules based on local information producing complex, organized and “intelligent” strategies at the population level. One of its main aspects is the widespread use of pheromones, which are chemical compounds laid by the ants used to attract other ants...

An agent-based model to investigate the roles of attractive and repellent pheromones in ant decision making during foraging.

Pharaoh's ants organise their foraging system using three types of trail pheromone. All previous foraging models based on specific ant foraging systems have assumed that only a single attractive pheromone is used. Here we present an agent-based model based on trail choice at a trail bifurcation within the foraging trail network of a Pharaoh's ant colony which includes both attractive (positive)...

Ant Foraging Revisited

Most previous artificial ant foraging algorithms have to date relied to some degree on a priori knowledge of the environment, in the form of explicit gradients generated by the nest, by hard-coding the nest location in an easily-discoverable place, or by imbuing the artificial ants with the knowledge of the nest direction. In contrast, the work presented solves ant foraging problems using two p...

Ant foraging on complex trails: route learning and the role of trail pheromones in Lasius niger.

Ants are central place foragers and use multiple information sources to navigate between the nest and feeding sites. Individual ants rapidly learn a route, and often prioritize memory over pheromone trails when tested on a simple trail with a single bifurcation. However, in nature, ants often forage at locations that are reached via more complex routes with multiple trail bifurcations. Such rou...

Bee-inspired foraging in an embodied swarm

We show the emergence of Swarm Intelligence in physical robots. We transfer an optimization algorithm which is based on beeforaging behavior to a robotic swarm. In simulation this algorithm has already been shown to be more effective, scalable and adaptive than algorithms inspired by ant foraging. In addition to this advantage, bee-inspired foraging does not require (de-)centralized simulation ...

Optimal and Resilient Pheromone Utilization in Ant Foraging

Pheromones are a chemical substance produced and released by ants as means of communication. In this work we present the minimum amount of pheromones necessary and sufficient for a colony of ants (identical mobile agents) to deterministically find a food source (treasure), assuming that each ant has the computational capabilities of either a Finite State Machine (FSM) or a Turing Machine (TM). ...
